Jacob doesn't show Martha affection because he already has his heart occupied by greed. His life would have been worth something if he was kind, took care of his wife, and wasn't hostile to everyone who took a second to talk to him. I personally feel sorry for his wife who lived in terror of him in the 52 years she lived with him.
